KARMİ VİLLAGE

Karmi commonly known as Karaman is a 4,000 years old village.

It would appear to be a quintessential Mediterranean village – but all is not what it seems like.

Although it is 4 miles away from Kyrenia, it feels like a whole another world. Karmi takes us into a magical world with its narrow streets, authentic properties on the hills, secret gardens, and a unique view of peaceful beautiful environment. Even though Karmi is a Cypriot village but in theory, no Cypriots are allowed to live there. Protected by the Ministry of Tourism, the properties are leased only to foreigners in return for the restoration of the village.

Karmi has a total of 167 properties since 1990. These properties had been leased for the last 49 years. There are 136 rental houses, 7 offices, a gallery and 31 private properties and 1 shop in the village. Currently not too many people left from the very first tenants. As a matter of fact, there aren’t many people living in Karmi Village. Some of the houses are very well maintained and some of them are abandoned.

High Street

High Street is a shop. That’s the only shop in the village.

It serves as the post office and off license. Offers DVD rentals, mobile top-ups, free wi-fi, postcards and a place to collect water bills.

Currently the shop is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. till 6 p.m. and on Saturday mornings. It remains closed on Thursdays and Sundays

Karmi has two types of houses.

  • Brown-colored houses which labels that these properties are under the Ministry of Tourism and are leased to international people for long-term rent.
  • Blue houses are labeled as private property.

The tourists who have heard about Karmi village usually end up visiting the place. In fact, the residence of Karmi village spread warm feelings for everyone visiting the village. During winter season most of the restaurants and cafes are closed due to the lack of activities in the village. Many events, tours and concerts are held in Karmi Square Church in order to increase the activities during the summer months. Anyone who enters the village is impressed by the magic of Karmi’s authentic and natural beauty.
